Following the end of World War II on Augut 15, 1945, the establishment of the Republic of Korea on August 15, 1948 and the institution of local autonomy on Augut 15, 1949, Daejeon-bu was renamed Daejeon City, at which time its population was 126,704 (density 3,548/km²) with 22,338 households.
The Korean War, which broke out on June 25, 1950, reduced the city to a heap of ruins, but it was reconstructed after the military recovery of the area on September 28, 1950.
The Military Revolution in May 1961, and the ensuing national economic growth, brought innovative changes to the city. Incorporation of Yucheon-myeon; Daehwa-ri and Ojeong-ri of Hoedeok-myeon; and Okgye-ri, Samjeon-ri, Hodong-ri and Gao-ri of Sannae-myeon of Daedeok-gun into Daejeon City, brought the population up to 289,511 inhabitants, the area to 88,218 km², with a total of 35 dongs. |

On July 1, 1970, Dae-dong, Seongnam-dong, Seonhwa-dong, Munchang-dong, Yongdu-dong and Daeheung-dong were all partitioned into two dongs which increased the number of dongs to 45.
On July 1, 1971, Daejeon City established four branch offices based on Ordinance No. 461 (promulgated June 2. 1991). The North Branch Office administered 9 dongs; the East Branch Office 11 dongs; the Central Branch Office 14 dongs; and West Branch Office 11 dongs.
On Sept. 1, 1977, Daejeon City established two gu based on Presidential Ordinance No. 8667 (promulgated August 27, 1977): Dong-gu (the East Branch Office and the North Branch Office) administered 20 dongs and Jung-gu (the Central Branch Office and the West Branch Office) 25 dongs.
On May 1, 1979, in accordance with the Office of Dong Establishment Regulation Law Act No. 929, Gayang-dong was divided into Gayang-dong and Yongjeon-dong, and Doma-dong into Doma 1 and Doma 2, which meant that Daejeon City had 21 dongs in Dong-gu and 26 dongs in Jung-gu. |

On Sept. 1, 1982, in accordance with the Office of Dong Establishment Regulation Law Act No. 1231, (promulgated July 30, 1982), Yucheon-dong was divided into Yucheon 1 and Yucheon 2, Goejeong-dong into Goejeong and Gajang-dong, and Gayang-dong into Gayang 1 and Gayang 2-dong. Dong-gu administered 22 dongs and Jung-gu 28 dongs.
On Feb. 15, 1983, in accordance with Presidential Ordinance No. 11027 (promulgated January 10, 1983) the entire area, Daedeok-gun Yuseong-eup, Hoedeok-myeon, and Guje-myeon's Munji, Jeonmin, Woncheon-ri and Yongsan-ri, and Dandong-myeon's Naedong, Gyocheon, Daejeong, Yonggye, Hakha-ri, Giseong-myeon's Gasuwon, Doan, and Gwanjeo-ri were incorporated into Daejeon City, which then administered 24 dongs in Dong-gu and one branch office, and 34 dongs in Jung-gu with an area of 203.80 km².
On Oct. 1, 1983, in accordance with Office of Dong Establishment Regulation Act No. 1303, (promulgated Sept. 5, 1983)Taepyeong-dong was divided Into Taepyeong 1 and Taepyeong 2-dong, and Ojeong-dong into Ojeong-dong and Daehwa-dong. Dong-gu administered 25 dongs and one branch office, 35 dongs in Jung-gu.
On Sept. 1, 1984, in accordance with Regulation of Daejeon City Law Act No. 1404 (promulgated Sept. 1, 1984), Yuseong Agency gained the status of city direct control.
On Nov. 1, 1985, in accordance with Office of Dong establishment Regulation Law Act No. 1461 (promulgated Oct. 4, 1985), Munhwa-dong was divided into Munhwa 1 and Munhwa 2-dong, Sanseong-dong into Sanseong-dong and Boksu-dong, and Doma 1 dong into Doma 1 and Byeon-dong. Dong-gu administered 25 dongs, Jung-gu administered 34 dongs and the Yuseong Branch administered 4 dongs.
On Jan. 1, 1987, in accordance with Presidential Law No. 12007 (promulgated Dec. 23, 1986), the entire area of Gyesan-ri, Jinjam-myeon, and Daedeok-gu was merged into Gyesan-dong, Jung-gu; a part of Samcheon-dong of Jung-gu to Ojeong-dong of Dong-gu; and a part of Ojeong-dong to Jungchon-dong of Jung-gu. |

On Jan. 1, 1988, in accordance with Presidential Law No. 12367 (promulgated Dec. 31, 1987), Seo-gu Office was established.
On Jan. 1, 1989, in accordance with Law No. 4049, (promulgated Dec. 31, 1988) Daedeok-gun (except Namseon-ri of Jinjam-myeon), was merged with Daejeon City and five self-governing offices (75 administrative dong 537.25 km² and 1,051,795 inhabitants) were established. |

On Jan. 1, 1990, the administrative district of Daejeon, Hoedeok2-dong composed of five gus and 76 dongs, was divided into Hoedeok 2-dong and Jungri-dong, in accordance with the Daedeok-gu's Autonomy Act No. 207 (promulgated Dec. 7, 1989).
On Sept. 1, 1991, in accordance with the Daedeok-gu's Autonomy Act No. 171 (promulgated Aug. 29, 1991), five gus and 77 dongs administrative districts were established with the division of Jungri-dong into Jungri-dong and Beop-dong.
On Dec. 1, 1991, in accordance with the Seo-gu's Autonomy Act No. 188 (promulgated Nov. 29, 1991), five gus and 78 dongs administrative districts were established with the division of Yongmun-dong into Yongmun-dong and Samcheon-dong.
On Sept. 1, 1992, in accordance with the Dong-gu's Autonomy Act No. 207 (promulgated Aug. 31, 1992) and in accordance with the Seo-gu's Autonomy Act No. 214 (promulgated Sep. 1, 1992) established five gus and 80 dongs administrative districts were established with division of Panam-dong into Panam 1-dong and Panam 2-dong; and Doma 2-dong into Doma 2-dong and Jeongnim-dong.

On Nov. 1, 1993, in accordance with the Seo-gu's Autonomy Act No. 249 (promulgated Nov, 1, 1993) five gus and 83 dongs administrative districts were established with the division of Yongmun-dong into Yongmun-dong and Tanbang-dong; Samcheon-dong into Samcheon-dong and Dunsan-dong; and Galma-dong into Galma-dong and Wolpyeong-dong.
On Jun. 1, 1994, in accordance with the Seo-gu's Autonomy Act No. 274 (promulgated Jul, 30, 1994) five gus and 84 dongs administrative districts were established with the division of Wolpyeong-dong into Wolpyeong1-dong, and Wolpyeong2-dong.
On Jan. 1, 1995, in accordance with Law No. 4789 (promulgated Dec. 30, 1994), the name of Daejeon City was changed to Daejeon Metropolitan City.
On Jan. 1, 1996, in accordance with the Seo-gu's Autonomy Act No. 341 (promulgated Dec. 22, 1995), and Daedeok-gu's Autonomy Act No. 296 (promulgated Dec. 29, 1995), five gus and 86 dongs administrative districts were established with the division of Dunsan-dong into Dunsan 1-dong and Dunsan 2-dong, and Beop-dong into Beop 1-dong and Beop 2-dong.
On August. 20, 1996, in accordance with the Seo-gu's Autonomy Act No. 385 (promulgated Aug. 20, 1996) , five gus and 87 dongs administrative districts were established with the division of Gajang-dong and Nae -dong into Gajang-dong.
On Dec. 26, 1997, in accordance with Bylaws No. 371 and 372 of Daedeok-gu (promulgated on Dec 26, 1997), Seokbong-dong became Sintanjin-dong.
On Jan. 1, 1998, in accordance with Article No. 405 of Jung-gu Ordinances (announced November 4, 1997), Seonhwa-dong 1, 2, and 3 merged into Seonhwa-dong; Daeheung-dong 1, 2, and 3 merged into Daeheung-dong ; and Munchang-dong 1 and 2 merged into Munchang-dong (making five gus and 82 dongs).
On Jan. 1, 1998, in accordance with Article No. 451 of Seo-gu Ordinances (announced December 4, 1997), Galma-dong was divided into Galma-dong 1 and 2; Wolpyeong-dong 1 was divided to create Wolpyeong-dong 3; and Wolpyeong-dong 2 was divided to create Mannyeon-dong (making five gu and 85 dong).
On May. 8, 1998, in accordance with Article No. 408 of Yuseong-gu Ordinances (announced May 8, 1998), the border of Beopjeong-dong was altered. (Part of Noeun-dong was absorbed by Jijok-dong.)

On Oct. 26, 1998, in accordance with Articles 422 and 423 of the Yuseong-gu Ordinances (announced October 26,1998), Jinjam-dong 1 and 2 merged to form Jinjam-dong ; and Tan-dong merged into Oncheon-dong 2 (making five gus and 83 dongs).
On Nov 23, 1998, in accordance with Article 449 of the Jung-gu Ordinances (announced November 23, 1998), Eunhaeng-dong and Seonhwa-dong merged to form Eunhaengseonhwa-dong; Yongdu-dong 1 and 2 merged together to form Yongdu-dong; and Sanseong-dong and Sanseo-dong merged to form Sanseong-dong (making five gus and 80 dongs).
On Dec. 14, 1998, in accordance with Articles No. 394, 395 and 396 of the Dong-gu Ordinances (announced October 13, 1998), Wonjeong-dong and Jung-dong merged to form Jungang-dong; Dae-dong 1 and Sinan-dong merged to form Daesin-dong; Chu-dong and Secheon-dong merged to form Daecheong-dong (making five gus and 76 dongs). |
